STATE OF WASHINGTON-WOODINVILLE

Dog Agility Classes

What is Dog Agility?

Dog agility is a "Game" you play with your dog. It is the canine equivalent of equestrian jumping events.  The object of this game is for you, the handler, to quickly, correctly and enthusiastically guide your dog through a sequence of obstacles:  jumps, A-frame, weave poles, teeter, tunnels, dogwalk etc.  When your dog is navigating the course he/she is evaluated on speed and obstacle accuracy.  (for a great visual explaination of the sport visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQNl1irWGJY)

Who is Eligible?

Though you may have seen certain breeds (Border Collies, Shetland Sheep Dogs, Austrialian Shepherds) in televised agility competitions or in local agility trials, any breed or mixed-breed of dog who is healthy/fit can learn to play and enjoy the "Game of Agility".

Dog Agility Classes

LEVEL 1-AGILITY FUNDAMENTALS teaches key obedience behaviors required in agility (i.e. focus on handler, sit, down, start-line stay, come from distractions and line-up at start-line).  In addition the vital skill of lead-hand-directing is taught to each handler/dog team.  Dogs also practice footwork to develop successful coordination for performing contact equipment in subsequent levels of instruction.  These basic skills and more, taught in the course, are utilized when performing simple sequences using jumps, tunnels and pause table.  Some teams may need to enroll in at least two sessions of this course.  (Prerequisite:  All handler dog teams enrolling in Aireborne Dog Agility classes for the first time, must take this course or have instructor evaluation for advancement)

LEVEL 2-AGILITY BASICS applies the groundwork skills acquired in Agility Fundamentals to being introduced to performance on some lowered contact equipment and jump work as well as additional obstacles.  Beginning utilization of key handling skills such as front and rear cross and agility commands such as "go" are also taught.  Handler and dog will develop teamwork through longer sequence training.  (Prerequisite:  Agility Fundamentals or instructor evaluation)

LEVEL 3-NOVICE AGILITY requires students to use skills taught in Agility Fundamentals and Agility Basics while learning to sucessfully and safely execute all lowered contact equipment(A-frame, Teeter, and Dogwalk).  In addition jump grid work and channel weaves are taught.  The foundation for how to execute tight turns, serpentines etc. is introduced. These skills are applied while running longer more sophisticated obstacle sequences which require front and rear crosses. (Prerequisite:   Agility Basics or instructor evaluation)

LEVEL 4-INTERMEDIATE AGILITY teaches solid independent contact performance on full-height contact equipment.  Straight line weave pole execution is introduced and longer  more sophisticated course sequences are also practiced.  In addition handlers are introduced to  agility course analysis.  (Prerequisite:   Novice Agility  or instructor evaluation)

LEVEL 5-ADVANCED AGILITY teaches how to handle more complex sequences, challenging course design and important handling patterns (i.e. serpentines, 270's, threadles, leadouts, etc.).  Students are also given instruction in how to enter and participate in dog agility trials.  (Prerequisite:  Intermediate Agility or instructor evaluation)
